The concentration camp was established in August 1938 as an external site of Dachau concentration camp. Until the liberation on May 5 1945 over 200000 people were deported into the concentration camp from over 30 different nations.
The concentration camp Mauthausen had been one of the most disreputable in the whole Nazi-universe because of the human destructions. The guidelines of death by work were introduced by the chief of the SS Heinrich Himmler.
In 1941 Himmler declared Mauthausen as an extermination camp. Most of the inmates were forced to do hard labour in a rock quarry. At the base of the infamous “stairs of death” was the rock quarry.
Because of the work in the rock quarry over 120000 people died. The concentration camp had a lot of external sites, the biggest of them Gusen and Melk. Mauthausen was the last camp to liberate.
